In the wake of climate disasters, the way we handle the aftermath can have profound impacts on our communities and the environment. The story of the Northern Rivers floods in New South Wales is a case in point, where thousands of truckloads of water-damaged materials ended up in landfills. But amidst this devastation, an opportunity emerged to rethink our approach to waste management and find innovative solutions.

When homes are damaged beyond repair, the typical response is to demolish them, often with little regard for the valuable materials they contain. In the case of the Northern Rivers floods, this meant losing not just homes but also precious old-growth timber, a resource that is increasingly difficult to come by.
A Circular Solution
Recognizing the potential value of these materials, the NSW Reconstruction Authority, Living Lab Northern Rivers, and the University of Technology Sydney embarked on a project to recover and reuse timber from uninhabitable homes. This "circular" approach aimed to eliminate waste and provide economic, social, and environmental benefits.
The Power of Collaboration
What makes this project particularly fascinating is the collaboration it fostered. The local community, educators, businesses, and government agencies came together to develop a pilot program that demonstrated the feasibility of salvaging premium timbers and transforming them into new objects. Deconstruction: A Challenging but Rewarding Process
Shifting from demolition to deconstruction presented significant challenges. There are established standards for demolishing buildings, but no guidelines for deconstruction.
